Wildlife You Could Spot in Antarctica

Penguins

Antarctica is famous for its penguins. You may encounter Adélie, chinstrap, and gentoo penguins, and on certain voyages, even the majestic emperor penguin. Watch them dive, feed, and interact in their natural habitat.

Whales

The nutrient-rich waters surrounding Antarctica attract a variety of whale species. Keep your eyes peeled for humpback whales breaching dramatically, minke whales cruising alongside the ship, and pods of orca (killer whales) hunting in coordinated groups.

Seals

The Antarctic coastline and ice shelves are prime habitats for seals. You might spot leopard seals hunting near penguin colonies, Weddell seals resting on ice, and crabeater seals gliding through the frigid waters. Each species plays a unique role in the region’s delicate ecosystem.

Seabirds

Antarctica’s skies and cliffs are alive with birdlife. Look out for wandering albatrosses, southern giant petrels, skuas, and Antarctic terns. These seabirds are often seen soaring above the waves or nesting along rocky outcrops.
