What's Involved
Our highly-qualified guides have many years of climbing, skiing and snowshoeing experience, and all hold relevant mountain instruction and safety certificates. They aim to provide a personalised and unique experience for every expeditioner whilst maintaining safety to the highest standards. We have one snowshoeing guide for every 10 guests.
While we aim to get out as often as possible, the number of outings will be dependent on the weather and our itinerary’s landing points. The average number of outings is usually six or more per voyage, lasting up to three hours per outing.
Every voyage is different, but some of our typical landing spots are:
Required Experience & Fitness
This popular alpine activity is easy to learn. No experience is necessary – all you need is a willingness to try. All training is provided, and our team of guides will have you trained and ready to go in no more than half an hour.
Participants should be confident in their footing and have an average level of fitness – outings may be up to three hours in duration. Those who enjoy hiking trails or taking long walks at home will possess enough fitness to enjoy this activity. As with any other activity, you will get more enjoyment out of it with some preparation in advance, such as long walks with uphill sections or bike riding.

How to Book

Is there an age limit for snowshoeing in Antarctica?
Yes. The minimum age to participate in our snowshoeing program is 14 years. Any participants aged between 14 and 18 must have a completed activity form signed by their parent or guardian. All participants must meet the required fitness and medical criteria outlined in the snowshoeing booking form.
What wildlife can I expect to see while snowshoeing in Antarctica?
While snowshoeing, wildlife encounters are possible but not guaranteed and will vary by landing site and conditions. You may see gentoo, Adélie or chinstrap penguins, Weddell or crabeater seals, and seabirds such as skuas and petrels. Spotting wildlife adds to the magic of exploring the pristine Antarctic landscape, but we always maintain a respectful distance and follow IAATO guidelines.
How often can I expect to snowshoe during my expedition?
We aim to offer multiple snowshoeing outings per voyage, usually up to two outings per day, weather and landing conditions permitting. Factors such as snow conditions, sea state, and itinerary will influence the number of opportunities. Each outing varies in location, duration, and difficulty — our guides will brief you beforehand so you can prepare accordingly.
What equipment is provided for snowshoeing?
Aurora Expeditions will supply snowshoes and ski poles for all participants. Snowshoes are simply strapped to your muckboots (gumboots) which are also supplied. In certain locations including glaciated areas you will be supplied with a climbing harness and carabiners for attaching to climbing ropes.
For maximum comfort, we recommend bringing waterproof shell layers, warm socks, gloves, goggles or sunglasses, and a lightweight daypack.
