Day 2 – Ushuaia > Tierra del Fuego National Park > Ushuaia

Home to subantarctic forests, dramatic waterfalls, snow-capped peaks and picturesque glacial lakes, Tierra del Fuego National Park offers travellers to the tip of Argentina a scenic day out. Your tour crosses Rio Pipo valley and the slopes of Monte Susana, before reaching the Austral Fueguino Railway station, one of the sectors where Ushuaia’s ‘old prison’ inmates toiled over a century ago. Imprisoned at ‘the end of the world’ early prisoners used the train to transport firewood and were known to push the carriages when the trains steam locomotive slowed. Resurrected in 1994, this popular train journey uses replica carriages allowing us to step back in time and travel the 7 kilometres back to Ushuaia, crossing bridges and peat bogs, valleys and farmlands, before entering the national park. Once in the park we board our coach to view scenic Lake Roca and Bahía Lapataia, both located on the Pan-American Route. At each site we’ll enjoy spectacular views, and walk amongst unique species of native forest, which are preserved solely within Argentina’s southernmost national park.  This popular day out is a must do for all visitors to Ushuaia.

We will begin the excursion traveling along part of National Route No. 3, crossing the Pipo River valley and the slopes of Mount Susana until we reach the Austral Fueguino Railroad station, one of the sectors where the inmates of the former Ushuaia prison worked. As we travel along part of the original route that the prison train ran, we will cross bridges and peat bogs and stop at La Macarena waterfall. After a brief description of the area, we will continue our trip entering the Tierra del Fuego National Park towards the sector where the Lombardich sawmill was located. The tour ends at the “Park Station”, where our driver and guide will be waiting for you to continue visiting the most attractive points of the Park and its impressive landscapes. For example, we will visit Lake Acigami (Rock) and Bahía Lapataia (where National Route 3, part of the Pan-American Highway, ends). In each site we will take short walks to appreciate the different species of the native forest and the fauna that is preserved within the southernmost National Park of Argentina.

After forty years without operating, in 1994 the End of the World Train resumed part of the old route taken by the prisoners’ train, which departed from the Ushuaia prison, located in the centre of the city, towards the slope of Mount Susana with the aim of obtaining materials (wood and stone) for its construction. The Main Train Station is located just 7 km from the city of Ushuaia, and it is where our guides and guards will invite you to relive the last 7 km of the route. On board the train you will be able to listen to the story of the prisoners who came to this area every day to cut wood, and delight yourself with magnificent landscapes, made up of the zigzagging Pipo River, La Macarena waterfall, the tree cemetery, and the majestic forest of tongues. In this way, you will visit an inaccessible part of the Tierra del Fuego National Park, where you will be able to enjoy this experience aboard a vintage railway, with its steam locomotives and elegant cars that have large windows and an individual audio system, which offers the possibility of listening to the story in 7 different languages, in order to be able not only to appreciate the nature that surrounds it, but also to know a very important part of the history of Ushuaia.
