Cystic fibrosis, also known as CF, is a hereditary disease affecting the exocrine system. There is no known cure and it can be debilitating and life-shortening as it causes frequent lung infections.

After speaking with Greg Mortimer who encouraged her to pursue her dream, provided that her doctor gave her the all clear, Melissa travelled to Antarctica with Aurora.

“Everybody has dreams, Antarctica was mine. I did this for all the families that have been affected by cystic fibrosis,” said Melissa.

“My message was to promote the increasing world of possibilities that are now available to anybody living with this disease.

“All the hours spent in hospitals getting breathers, tune ups, needles, procedures, infections, coughing and the tears were now behind me. I embraced that moment and I truly understood that dreams are possible.”

Melissa planted a flag on behalf of Cystic Fibrosis Australia in the ice and was presented with a book of telegrams and letters of congratulations from more than one hundred other CF sufferers.

Her story of travelling to the end of the earth is an inspiration to us all, and a reminder that there are no limits. With a little courage and a lot of determination – anything is possible.
